Top Baby Names in Florida

For those who follow the U.S. Social Security Administration’s top baby names, it may feel like déjà vu, as the leading five names in Florida have hardly changed.

Liam and Olivia remain at the top of the chart, continuing its nationwide popularity trend. They are followed by Emma and Isabella, though their rankings have shifted slightly.

Lucas and Elijah have consistently ranked among the top five boys’ names over the years, along with Noah and Oliver. Floridians have favored the name Mateo, reflecting the state’s growing Hispanic population, which now constitutes over 27 percent of Florida’s residents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

According to a BabyCentre.com survey, parents over 35 are more likely to choose a classic or old-fashioned name. In Florida, classics such as Victoria, Emily, Ethan, and Michael continue to be popular, with at least 459 children having those names.

This also includes an additional 124 boys who have been named Matthew this year, elevating the name to one of the top 10, up from its position at number six last year when 500 children were named Matthew in Florida. The same can’t be said for the name Harper which was ranked at no. 19 last year and 29 this year.

In this state, unusual names seem to be few and far between, with classics being most favored.

Newsweek previously spoke to linguist Adam Cooper, a professor at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, to find out why some names like Liam aren’t going out of fashion despite being around 200 years old.

Cooper explained that parents prefer names that roll off the tongue as opposed to “hard stops.”

“It’s really interesting to see how prominent the patterns were,” Cooper told Erin Kayata of Northeastern Global News. “Names like Patrick, Peter or Greg—these are names that would be more ‘stopful,’ so to speak. These stop sounds are not here in the list, really […] there’s more of a flow to the sounds and sound combinations making up these popular names.”
