Florida Breaks Record for COVID Hospitalizations, a Day After Reporting Most New Cases

Florida on Sunday broke a previous record for the most COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S., just one day after the state registered its highest single-day COVID-19 case number.

Florida now has 10,207 people hospitalized with confirmed coronavirus cases, a number that surpasses a previous record the state set on July 23, 2020, when 10,170 people were hospitalized, according to the Associated Press.

The Sunshine State is now leading the nation per capita with COVID-19 hospitalizations, with an average of 1,525 new adult hospitalizations a day and 35 daily pediatric hospitalizations.

Those numbers come just one day after Florida recorded its highest single-day COVID-19 case number, with 21,683, as the Delta variant continues to spread through predominantly unvaccinated communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Florida leads the U.S. in new cases in the last seven days with over 103,000, which far exceeds much larger states including Texas (47,159) and California (35,464).

This is a developing news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
